Elder's Request ( New Deacons )

Greetings from the elders of Highland church of Christ.

The elders have decided it is time to select additional deacons to carry on the work of Highland church of Christ. We ask that each of our baptized members look at the qualifications for deacons as found in 1 Timothy 3:8-13, then select men you believe fit these qualifications. Each member should take one of the selection forms home with them today, study the scriptures, write his/her suggested names on it, and return the form to any of our 4 elders by Sunday, May 13, 2012.  We want to emphasize that the names you give are suggestions of people you believe might be willing and qualified to serve in this capacity.  This is not a nomination process, and all names submitted will be reviewed by the elders, then those who are deemed qualified and willing to serve will be brought before the congregation as deacons at a later time.

Remember, as you look around the congregation, think about the qualifications in 1st Timothy.  These men must:

-          Be respected

-          Be careful in their speech

-          Not drinking too much wine/alcohol (getting drunk)

-          Be honest in their dealings with others

-          Be knowledgeable about the Scriptures and always doing what is right

-          Be tested to see that there is nothing wrong in their lives and that they are responsible individuals.

-          Be the husband of one wife (in this congregation, we require they not be divorced)

-          Their wives must be respected, not gossipers, and trustworthy

-          Men must be good leaders of their wives and children (Must have children)

Names for potential deacons can be given to any elder.  We will accept suggestions for one week, ending on Sunday, May 13, 2012.

These are the areas of work in which we feel we need a deacon.  Some of these areas are currently being done by a deacon, and some are new.

-          Worship

-          Missions

-          Benevolence

-          Buildings

-          Grounds

-          Evangelism/Tracts

-          Bible Class Coordinator (infant to High School)

-          Fellowship

-          Local Evangelism

-          Possibly Jr High and High School program

Here is the process by which we intend to accomplish this task:

  1. Meet with deacons and ministers to determine which areas of work we need deacons to help us with.  This was done on April 29, 2012.
  2. Inform the congregation of our intent to seek new deacons and ask for suggestions for men qualified and willing to serve as deacons.  This was done on May 6, 2012.  The congregation will be given until May 13, 2012 to respond by giving suggestions to one of the 4 elders..
  3. All names suggested by the members of Highland church of Christ will be reviewed by the elders to determine their qualifications to serve (as per 1 Timothy 3:8-13.)  Those deemed qualified will be asked by the elders if they are willing to serve as deacons.  It must be understood that this process is strictly confidential between the elders and the potential deacons.  At no time will the elders share with any member or non-member of the congregation any reason why any man was or was not chosen to be a deacon.
  4. The elders will share with the congregation the list of potential deacons deemed qualified and willing to serve.  At that point, we will give the members of the congregation a period of 2 weeks to let the elders know IN WRITING with scriptural references, why any of the deacon candidates are felt to not be qualified to serve as deacons.  If there are objections, the elders will review the concerns, talk to the candidates, and make the final determination about using that man as a deacon.  This process is also strictly confidential and will not be shared with anyone.
  5. At the end of this process, the congregation will be informed of the full list of deacons who will be serving Highland church of Christ.  At that point, the selection process will be final.
  6. The elders will meet again with the deacons and ministers to determine assignments for each deacon to make sure all the work established for the congregation will get done.  This will be a group process with input from all.

The elders thank you, the congregation, in advance for your patience, love, encouragement, assistance, and cooperation as we move through this process.  May God bless us all as we strive to do His Will in all things.
